Coconut charcoal briquette prices from Vietnam: what drives them

Key points

  • Price per ton is set by shell cost, spec, packaging and container load more than by the factory's margin.
  • Shell prices move with the coconut season, so quotes have a short validity.
  • Compare quotes only on the same spec, packaging, incoterm and payment terms.
  • A lower price with weaker spec or packaging is often more expensive per usable kilo.

“What is your price per ton?” is usually the first question a buyer asks a coconut charcoal factory. It is also the question with the least useful answer until the spec, packaging and delivery terms are fixed. Two quotes for “coconut briquettes FOB Ho Chi Minh City” can differ a lot and both be fair, because they describe different products.

This guide explains what goes into the price of coconut charcoal briquettes and shisha cubes from Vietnam, why quotes move and how to compare them properly. We do not publish prices, because they change too often to be useful. Factories quote each RFQ directly.

The cost stack

A coconut charcoal quote is built from a few large components. Their share changes with the season and the product, but the structure is stable.

Component What moves it Buyer lever
Carbonised shell Coconut harvest, demand from other buyers, weather Order timing, recurring volume
Binder Tapioca starch price Spec (binder ratio affects ash and strength)
Crushing, pressing, cutting Labour, machine type, shape complexity Shape choice
Drying Energy, drying time for the moisture target Moisture target
Packaging Box size, print, carton strength, bag type Packaging format
Inland transport and port Distance to Cat Lai or Cai Mep, port charges Incoterm
Testing and documents Lab tests, certificate of origin, fumigation Inspection scope
Factory margin Competition, order size, payment terms Payment terms, volume

The largest single input is usually the carbonised shell. Everything that changes the amount of shell needed per finished ton, such as higher fixed carbon targets, lower ash or tighter size tolerance, raises the price.

Why shell prices move

Coconut shells are a by-product of the copra and coconut water industries. Supply depends on how many nuts are harvested and processed, which moves with the season and the weather. Demand comes from charcoal factories, activated carbon plants and other users of shell.

When shell supply is short, kiln operators raise their prices and factories either raise quotes or, in the worst case, stretch the shell with cheaper material. This is one reason spec drift often appears a few containers into a relationship. It is also why quotes have a short validity, often between one week and one month.

Energy, exchange rates and freight

Three outside factors also move quotes, even when the spec stays the same.

  • Energy. Drying ovens run for days on each batch. When fuel or electricity prices rise, the cost of reaching a low moisture target rises with them.
  • Exchange rates. Factories buy shell, binder and labour in Vietnamese dong and sell in US dollars. Currency moves change their margin and, over time, their quotes.
  • Freight. Ocean freight is not part of an FOB price, but it is part of your landed cost. Freight rates on routes to Europe and the Middle East can swing sharply within a season, which can outweigh differences between factory quotes.

This is another reason to separate the FOB price from freight when comparing suppliers, and to ask for a clear validity date on every quote.

How spec changes the price

Tighter specs cost more to make. The table shows the direction of the effect, not a fixed amount.

Spec change Effect on cost Why
Higher fixed carbon Up More careful carbonisation, better shell selection
Lower ash Up Cleaner shell, less binder, more sorting
Lower moisture Up Longer drying, more energy
Tighter size tolerance Up More rejects at cutting
Hexagonal instead of cube Up Extrusion dies, more handling
Pillow BBQ briquette instead of cube Down Faster pressing, simpler packaging

If your market does not need a very tight spec, do not ask for one. A BBQ distributor does not need shisha-grade ash content, and paying for it only raises the landed cost.

How packaging changes the price

Packaging is often underestimated. It affects both the cost per ton and how many tons fit in a container.

  • Bulk cartons or jumbo bags are the cheapest per ton and load the most weight per container.
  • 1 kg retail boxes for shisha add printed cardboard, inner bags and master cartons. They also reduce the net charcoal weight in a container, typically to about 18 to 20 tons in a 20ft container.
  • Private label printing adds artwork, plates and a printer’s minimum order, and extends the lead time.
  • BBQ retail bags of 2, 5 or 10 kg cost more than bulk but less than boxed shisha packaging.

When you compare quotes, check the net charcoal weight per container, not only the gross weight.

Incoterm and payment terms

The same product costs different amounts depending on who pays for what.

Term Seller pays Buyer pays
EXW factory Production and packing Everything from the factory gate
FOB Ho Chi Minh City Up to loading on the vessel at Cat Lai or Cai Mep Ocean freight, insurance, destination costs
CFR destination port Up to the destination port, including ocean freight Insurance, unloading, import
CIF destination port As CFR, plus minimum insurance Unloading, import

FOB Ho Chi Minh City is the most common basis for comparing quotes, because ocean freight rates change weekly and are easier to compare separately.

Payment terms also matter. A factory that receives a 30% deposit and the balance against a copy of the bill of lading carries less risk than one waiting for an LC, and the price can reflect that.

A template to compare quotes

Ask every factory to fill in the same fields. If one cannot, that is useful information too.

Field Factory A Factory B Factory C
Product and shape
Size and tolerance
Fixed carbon min
Ash max, basis
Moisture max
Burn time and test method
Packaging, net kg per unit
Net tons per 20ft container
Price per ton, incoterm
Payment terms
Lead time from deposit
Quote validity
Sample cost and freight

Then compute the price per net usable ton on the same incoterm. A quote that looks cheaper per gross ton can be more expensive once packaging weight and container load are counted.

Hidden costs to include

  • Pre-shipment inspection. Paid by the buyer. Ask inspectors for a quote before you order.
  • Dangerous goods handling. If the charcoal cannot show a valid self-heating test result, the carrier may treat it as dangerous cargo, which costs more or can be refused.
  • Fumigation and pallets. Depends on the destination’s rules.
  • Destination charges. Port handling, customs clearance, duty and inland delivery.
  • Breakage and rejects. Weak cartons or soft cubes lead to claims from your own customers.

How to ask for a quote that can be priced quickly

Factories answer complete RFQs first. An RFQ that says only “coconut briquettes, best price” usually gets a generic reply or none at all. Include:

  1. Product, shape and size.
  2. Fixed carbon, ash and moisture targets, or “factory standard” if you have none yet.
  3. Packaging format, with net weight per unit.
  4. Quantity per shipment and expected frequency.
  5. Destination port and preferred incoterm.
  6. Payment terms you can offer.
  7. Whether you need samples first and where to send them.

With this, a factory can price in a day or two. Without it, you will spend a week answering questions before you see a number.

When a low price is a warning

A quote well below the others for the same spec is worth questioning. Common reasons:

  • The factory plans to use cheaper shell or filler, which shows up as higher ash or lower fixed carbon.
  • The packaging is lighter than you assumed.
  • The price is on a different incoterm or payment term.
  • The quote validity is very short and will be revised before your deposit.

Ask for the spec, the packaging and the terms in writing, then test samples against them. Our guide to shisha charcoal specs explains how to read the numbers and run a bowl test.

FAQ

Why do you not publish a price list?

Coconut charcoal prices change with the shell season, energy costs and exchange rates, and they depend on the exact spec and packaging. A published list would be out of date within weeks. Factories quote each RFQ directly.

How long is a coconut charcoal quote valid?

Often 7 to 30 days. Shell cost is the largest input and it moves with the season. Ask for the validity date on every quote.

Is BBQ briquette cheaper than shisha cube?

Usually yes per ton. BBQ briquettes have looser ash and fixed carbon targets, simpler shapes and bulk bags instead of retail boxes. Shisha cubes need tighter specs, more cutting and more packaging.

Does a bigger order lower the price?

Somewhat. Recurring container volume helps a factory plan shell purchases and production, which can improve the price. The larger effect comes from spec and packaging choices.
