Why the Mekong Delta supplies so much of the world's coconut charcoal
Vietnam's coconut industry is concentrated in three southern provinces, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Tien Giang, where roughly 200,000 hectares of coconut palm produce copra (for oil), coconut water and the dense, mature shells that make premium charcoal. Shells are a by-product and they have to go somewhere. The good ones go to charcoal kilns in the same province, often within a 30 km radius of the farm.
That short supply chain is what makes Vietnamese coconut charcoal interesting for buyers. Shells do not sit in warehouses for months. Carbonisation happens fresh, carbon yield is consistent, and the finished cube or briquette has a predictable burn profile, which is exactly what hookah lounges and BBQ brands check when they evaluate a new supplier.
The supplier base is fragmented. There are dozens of charcoal factories in Ben Tre alone, from artisan kiln operators to large export-grade plants. Some make excellent shisha cube, others are better at briquette extrusion, a few do both. Our job is to read your spec and send it only to the factories whose grade, capacity and packaging fit.

You sign with the factory you choose. Pre-shipment lab testing, loading at Cat Lai or Cai Mep and the export document set follow.
Quality
Test every container before it leaves the port
Coconut charcoal is a commodity where spec drift is common. A factory can hit 75% fixed carbon on the first three containers, then drop to 70% on the fourth when raw material cost rises. The fix is contractual, not a promise.
- Third-party lab testing per shipment. SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas. The buyer chooses the inspector and the lab certificate is issued before loading.
- Production check. Ask for a mid-run visual check or photos of cube uniformity, packaging labels and warehouse storage.
- Replacement clause. Write into the contract that out-of-spec results mean replacement or credit for the affected portion.

What buyers ask before a first order
What grades of coconut charcoal can I source from Vietnam through you?
Three main grades: shisha cube charcoal (25 mm or 26 mm cubes, 72 to 76% fixed carbon, low ash, long burn), hexagonal shisha charcoal for premium hookah lounges, and BBQ briquettes (cylindrical or pillow shape) for grilling export. Raw coconut shell charcoal as an activated carbon precursor is available on request from some factories.
What are typical MOQ and lead times for coconut charcoal from Vietnam?
Standard MOQ is one 20-foot container: about 18 to 20 metric tons for shisha cube and 25 to 27 tons for BBQ briquettes. Lead time is usually 25 to 35 days from confirmed PO and deposit, depending on grade and packaging. Some factories accept trial orders of 1 to 3 tons, sometimes consolidated with other cargo. Say so in your RFQ and we only match factories that accept small runs.
Where is Vietnam coconut charcoal produced?
Most production sits in the Mekong Delta, mainly Ben Tre, Tra Vinh and Tien Giang provinces, where coconut farming is concentrated. Shells are collected from copra and coconut water processing, carbonised in kilns, then crushed, mixed with binder, pressed and dried. We only introduce factories that can document their kiln-to-shipment process.
Can third-party quality inspection be arranged before shipment?
Yes. Pre-shipment inspection (PSI) through SGS, Intertek or Bureau Veritas is standard for this product and covers ash content, fixed carbon, moisture, burn time and sulfur. The lab certificate is issued before container loading. Inspection cost is on the buyer side. Put the inspector and test list in your contract with the factory.
Why source coconut charcoal from Vietnam instead of Indonesia?
Vietnam offers comparable raw material from the same coconut belt, shorter sea routes to North Asia (Japan, Korea), competitive labor cost and a smaller pool of mid-tier exporters, which means less commoditization and clearer factory accountability. Indonesia remains larger by volume. Vietnam is a good fit for mid-volume buyers who want responsiveness and traceability.
